It occurred to me that, as a group, we never specifically reflected on Arnold's place in the realm of the university. If we are to do so using his methods of critique, we must deeply examine the matter, substance, manner, and style of learning that we are both receiving and putting out. Does the university have a higher authority, a "higher truth", than culture?
Can the university be examined as a sub-culture?
Can the university then, just as poetry, be examined as a place of cultural significance in the development of nationalism, politics, a people?
Indeed, Arnold's "estimates" can be utilized to assess the quality of education, the quality of OUR university. I would be interested in feedback concerning how ODU holds up under the microscope of Arnold's historical, personal, and real estimates.
